Zoltek's Take: Make no mistake, wind energy is not going anywhere. Wind energy is a fast growing segment of the alternative energy markets, however, it still only represents 1% of electricity generation in the United States. As noted in this article, if the U.S. were to get 20% of its electricity needs by 2020, it “would envision more than 75,000 new wind turbines, many of them larger than those operating today.‿
This supports our thesis that turbines will continue to get larger, as longer blades improves the efficiency and power generation from any given turbine. The best way to explain the increase in efficiency is that the power generated from a turbine is the square of the length of the blade. So, if you double the length of the blade, you QUADRUPLE the power it generates. We think the value proposition for longer blades, and therefore using more carbon fiber, is quite compelling.
